While cruising the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, the Cenote Dos Ojos is an amazing body of water for you to discover when cruising near Playa del Carmen of Tulum, Mexico. Located between Tulum and Playa del Carmen is one of the most beautiful cenotes in all of Mexico. It is called Cenote Dos Ojos and it is a flooded cave system that was originally explored in 1987 and continues still today. These sinkholes are where the first exploration of the cave began. |
- The translation for Cenote Dos Ojos is “Two Eyes Cenote”. The reason for the name is due to the two sinkholes that measure 230 feet in diameter and connected by a long passageway that measures 1,312 feet long.
- This site is one of the most gorgeous diving sites the Yucatan Peninsula has to offer. In addition, the underwater cave systems is one of the largest in all of the Yucatan.
- Dos Ojos is the name of the location for the deepest underwater cave which measures 387 feet. The entire cave system is an impressive 38 miles long making it the supposed longest known underwater cave system in the world.
- The area where the sinkholes are located remains the most stunning view because there is naturally more light here and the visibility of the water is crystal clear. Not only are the views breathtaking, the water is an ideal 77 degrees most of the time.
- The turquoise water, limestone, and surrounding flora and fauna are something you could only liken to a postcard. It is truly a heavenly spot that you will long to return to time and time again.
- This incredible destination has been featured on an IMAX 2002 film, the 2005 Hollywood movie The Cave, the 2006 BBC documentary Journey Into Amazing Caves, and the Discovery Channels series called Planet Earth.
There are steps going down into the water, as well as wooden benches in the area to sit on and snorkeling equipment can be rented at an additional charge.
