Mayapán Archaeological Zone
TELCHAQUILLO, YUCATAN, MEXICO
While cruising the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, be sure to take a trip to the walled city of Mayapan. Mayapan translates in the Yucatan Mayan language to the name they called the Yucatan Peninsula prior to the conquest. Mayapan is thought to be the last great capital city of the Mayans in the Postclassic. It covers an area of 2.5 miles. The city had approximately 4,000 structures and about 12,000 people who lived there. |
The site is smaller than Chichen Itza but still has strong similarities in the architectural designs you will see. One of the first places you will notice this is the primary building called Castillo de Kukulkan. The ruling class residency which is in the Central Plaza contains administrative, civic and religious buildings. They were built on foundations which have corridors that have columns, temples and oratories with an alter and side banquet.
There are also round observatories which with small sanctuaries. Mayapan’s inhabitants lived in the site until 1450 AD when the fall of the city occurred. It is believed that the inhabitants on the site lived there from the Pre-classic and Early Classic periods of 300 BC to 600 AD.
The Mayapan archaeological zone is accessible from the town of Merida. You will need to take State Highway No. 18 to the town of Tecoh. From there, you will go to the town of Telchaquillo which is just 1 mile from Mayapan and the site.
