Great Museum of the Mayan World
MERIDA, YUCATAN, MEXICO
While cruising the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, the Great Museum of the Mayan World is a fantastic place to visit when you’re in Merida. It stretches over almost 5 acres and sits next to the Siglo XXI Convention Center just north of Merida. The museum is an architectural wonder designed by Josefina Rivas Acevedo, Enrique Duarte Aznar, William Ramirez Pizzaro, and Richard Combaluzier Medina. The museum received the the Partnerships Awards 2012 for “Innovative Projects for the preservation of cultural heritage and its dissemination”. |
The venues design was what garnered the decision to give them the award. Mainly due to the fact that it was built based on the Mayan cosmogony universe that is made up of three levels which are heaven, earth, and the underworld.
The Mayans believed that the sacred ceiba or ya’axche’ tree was the center of the universe and that its branches were supports for the sky, and the roots were broke through to the underworld. Mayan mythology indicates the tree was associated with human fertility and cosmic stability.
You will see the trees homage portrayed in the exhibition rooms, patios and terraces, the entrance plaza, threshold, and gardens. The museum includes a collection of more than 1,160 pieces including textiles, furnishings and religious elements that reflect the Maya culture. There are also books and historical documents as well as engravings that reflect the pre-Hispanic era. Some of those are bas-reliefs, stelae, ceramic vessels, stone sculptures, ornaments of luxury out of gold, jade and shell.
The museum offers a great learning experience into the world of the Mayans. The exhibits allow the visitors to interact with digital systems, immersion rooms, audiovisuals, internet lines, and projections. The museum is open Wednesday to Monday from 9am to 5pm.
