Museo de la Isla de Cozumel
COZUMEL, QUINTANA ROO, MEXICO
While cruising the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, you'll find one of Cozumel's hidden gems the newly renovated Museo de la Isla de Cozumel, the Museum on the Island of Cozumel. This museum gives an incredible glimpse into the rich history of the island when the government first arrived in Cozumel. Its history dates back to the time prior to when the Spaniards conquered Cozumel. That was a very trying and difficult time on the island because various diseases wiped out many of the Maya people. |
The museum has a rich history with videos of many of the homes people lived in, and the gods they worshipped back in 500AD. It has a fantastic sword collection, a very colorful doll collection, and lots of pirate items to explore. They also have an exceptional underwater display that is very informative about the various species of fish in the area.
There are exhibits about the various animals that were brought to the island as well. They do a fantastic job of explaining the facts of their culture as well as offering numerous maps of the area that really bring it all together. They have some incredible videos about the many hurricanes that have damaged Cozumel over the years, and how the island has recovered since.
One of the most interesting topics you’ll hear about is how Abe Lincoln had planned to buy the island. But when the Civil War broke out, his plans were derailed. They are always adding new exhibits so even if you have visited before, there’s always something new to see. Plus its a great way to beat the heat and enjoy the cool A/C.
Feel free to bring your camera but remember, no flash is allowed. There are also no drinks or wet swimsuits allowed. It will take you approximately 2 hours to see the entire museum. It is also wheelchair accessible.
