Muyil-Chunyaxche Archaeological Zone
MUNICIPALITY OF FELIPE CARRILLO PUERTO,
QUINTANA ROO, MEXICO Archaeological site of Muyil-Chunyaxche is a great ruin to visit when cruising Play del Carmen in the State of Quintana Roo. This is a very interesting ruin thats situated near the Muyil Lagoon. This jungle settlement extends across 38 hectares and was one of the earliest settlements on the Caribbean Coast. The Castillo (pyramid) stands 57 feet high making it the highest pyramid on the Riviera Maya Coast. Its a beautiful area to see because you have views of the Muyil Lagoon and the jungle. There are Ceiba trees located throughout the site which are known as the “Tree of Life”. This was a densely populated area during the pre-Hispanic era. |
More The buildings you will see there were mostly used for religious and residential purposes and display a very Peten architectural design. Because of its location to the lagoon, it was a very important trade route for ships to access the Caribbean Sea through Lguna Campechen and Boca Paila. There is a very neat boardwalk the takes you into the Sian Kaan (a heritage site with mangroves, tropical forest, marshes and a barrier reef). It is the largest protected area in the Mexican Caribbean.
There are actually two coastal Maya ruin sites here but only one of them is accessible to the public. It used to be free to enter but as of 2015 there is a small entrance fee of 50 pesos per person. You will need to pay at the small palapa at the entrance to the boardwalk, or the caretaker of the premises may asked you to pay as you are walking on the boardwalk. There are plenty of parking spaces and restrooms and a rest area are also available.
The ruins are located via Federal Highway 307 and the entrance is located right off the federal highway. Comfortable shoes, water, and sunscreen and bug spray is recommended.
