Hacienda Sotuta de Peon
MERIDA, YUCATAN, MEXICO
Hacienda Sotuta de Peon is a wonderful place to visit if you’re anywhere near Merida. Haciendas are basically large ranches that were mini cities in and of themselves back in the late 19th century. Henequen which is native to the area was grown in large scale on the western half of the Yucatan Peninsula. Henequen is used to make rope and other products like coaster and hats. Because it required hundreds of manpower hours to operate the equipment that produced the henequen, ranches were often small self sufficient cities. They had everything from hospitals to schools, to churches, as well as the housing needed for workers. There were beautiful mansions and haciendas with tall smokestacks. |
You can take a tour of Hacienda Sotuta de Peon in a mule pulled cart. Since it was built in late 19th century and still has furnishings from that era. There is a hacienda restaurant and gift shop where you can buy products made of henequen. The cenote is where you can have a swim, get a drink at the bar, or have a relaxing massage. Be sure to bring a towel and a swimsuit. Dress comfortable as this tour requires some walking. This is a very popular excursion with 2 tours per day so its best to book in advance.
