In 1929, Frida was married to artist Diego Rivero who was 20 years her senior. Frida and Diego had a very rocky relationship where they had nasty fights and there was plenty of infidelity. They divorced only to remarry years later. Frida was in a terrible tram accident a one point in her life only to lose her leg to an infection, She desperately wanted to have children and even became pregnant. But when it was clear she was going to lose the baby anyway, she had an abortion performed. Sometime later on, she became pregnant again only to lose that baby to a miscarriage. It was abundantly clear at this point that she would never be able to bear children for her husband Diego. She knew Diego was not faithful to her and she befriended her family doctor, writing him many letters over the years. Diego made a request to his trust caretakers that the letters were not to be released until at least 15 years after his death in 1957. The letters however remained hidden in trunks for over 50 years behind the bathroom walls of her original home in Mexico City because one of the patrons hid the letters there. Along with the letters, there were X-rays of Kahlo's fractured back, a trolley bus ticket and a note with a lipstick-stained kiss.
Today, Frida Kahlo's life is almost as famous as her artwork. Badly injured in an accident as a teenager and then mistreated by her by her husband, Frida became a symbol of strength for many, as she triumphed over pain and used the power of art for healing.
