Historical and Cultural References
Merida Yucatan, also called the White City, was founded in 1542 by the Spanish explorer Francisco de Montejo. It was originally the Mayan City of T’ho (Toh). T’ho was an important Mayan city located on what is now the Main Square, downtown Merida Mexico. The Spaniards forced the Mayan people, to dismantle all the temples and pyramids built there.
Main Square Merida Yucatan - They used the huge stones as the foundation for the Cathedral of San Ildefonso (1556-1599); the oldest cathedral on the American Continent. The stones were also used for other buildings around the now main square. The exact origin of its nickname “The White City” is not very clear, some people claim that it is due to the old buildings that were white washed with a white lime mixture, others say that it is because the city was always kept very clean. Also there are people who say that the reason is that when this colonial city was founded there was a strong racial segregation between the Mayan natives and the white people arriving from Europe. They wanted the city of Merida Yucatan to be inhabited only by whites.

Merida Yucatan has always been and still is a very peaceful and safe place to visit and live in. With a current population of almost one million, it is still safe to take a stroll downtown or Paseo de Montejo in the middle of the night. Most restaurants close their doors after midnight, so you will still find people on the streets going home after a late dinner. You will also see police cars patrolling the streets day and night.
