San Gervasio Archaeological Zone
SAN MIGUEL DE COZUMEL, QUINTANA ROO, MEXICO
The San Gervasio Archaeological Zone is a pre-Hispanic settlement located on an old cattle ranch in Cozumel. The original Mayan name for it is unknown but most likely around 300 AD. Around the year 600, there was growth in the city which appears to be better constructed than in previous years. Approximately in the year 1000, Chichen Itza was the big political and economic area on the Yucatan Peninsula, but San Gervasio was incorporated into a very intensely economic network as well. |
From 1200 to 1450 AD most of the buildings seen today were built during that time. The area is chained together by various white roads. The main corridors are known as Manitas, Chichán Nah ("Little House"), El Álamo, Nohoch Nah ("Big House"), Murcielagos, Ka'na Nah ("High House") and El Ramonal. The El Ramonal is still in the process of being explored so it is not open to visitors.
The Mayan settlements that were in Cozumel linked them to the worship of the Patron Saint of Medicine, the goddess Ixchel, and weaving and childbirth. There is some skepticism as to the archaeological relationship of San Gervasio to the Ixchel cult.
San Gervasio is located approximately 7 kilometers east of todays site of San Miguel de Cozumel off a nice paved road. It can be accessed via taxi on the islands cross roads. Many tourist agencies also operate guided tours from some of the cities main hotels. There is plenty of parking in case you rent a car. There are restrooms, a soda fountain, and craft stores.
The area is operated by the Cozumel Parks and Museums Foundation. There is a small fee to enter the facility and it's recommended you bring comfortable shoes, bug spray, sunscreen, and water.
