San Miguelito Archaeological Zone
CANCUN, QUINTANA ROO, MEXICO
While cruising the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico one of the best sites you can visit when your cruise takes you to Cancun, is the Archaeological site of San Miguelito, Quintana Roo. The name San Miguelito was given to the old coprero ranch which operated in the area from 1950 -1970. This was and old chiefdom of Ecab settlement known for it’s strong economy of fishing, agriculture, and production of cotton, copal, salt, and honey. Various structures still stand to date and have been explored. |
They are the Chaak Palace, Dragon Set, and the North and South Sets. There is also a basement located on the South Complex that is of great relevance. It underwent a remodel at least 3 times while it was occupied during the pre-Hispanic timeframe where the remains of a Costa Oriental style temple are currently preserved.
The remaining structures are mostly housing platforms, and greater than 50 human burials have been recovered, along with numerous artifacts like flint, quartz, copper axes, basalt, ornaments and tools made from raw materials, and more. The entire site correlates to the latter Postclassic period from 1200 AD to 1550 AD.
The site is open from Tuesdays to Sundays from 9:00amam - 4:30pm. In order to access the site, you will enter through the Mayan Museum of Cancun which is located at 16.5 km of Bulevar Kukulcan, in the Hotel Zone of Cancun. It is 2 km from the archaeological zone of El Rey, and 7 km from the Convention Center and 3.5 km from Punta Nizuc. One of the best ways to reach the site is by taking public transport. The site has a ticket office, public restrooms, parking, lockers, and a rest area. It is highly recommended you wear comfortable shoes. These ruins are smaller than Chichen Itza, but every bit as interesting and exciting. Learn more about Yucatan tours and attractions and cruising Cozumel, Mexico, with Yucatan Cruises.
