Paseo de Montejo
MERIDA, YUCATAN
While cruising the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, be sure to visit Paseo de Montejo a notable 10-block long avenue named after the Spanish conquistador, Francisco de Montego in Merida, Mexico. He founded the city in 1542 and it is the location of some of the most important monuments of the city. There were a lot of big beautiful mansions that were built there in the 19th century by some of the towns wealthy elite. The avenue is lined with beautiful tamarind and laurel trees making for a great Sunday afternoon stroll. |
One of the first things you should see is the Monumento a la Patria. It is a historic symbol of Mexico located in the city. One of the most photographed and famous residences in Merida is the twin houses, or better known as “Casa Gemelas”. They were constructed as duplicates of 20th century French buildings, many of which are still privately owned today.
If you happen to be in town on a Saturday, Noche Mexicana takes place close to Casa Gemelas. The area comes to life with entertainment artists, and dancing in the evening. An added bonus is the historical homes are beautiful at night and make for a nice romantic evening.
The avenue is full of fantastic restaurants and coffee shops so foodies can get their fix. One of the most popular choices is Heladeria El Colon which is famous for their ice cream. Another sought after item is “Pox”, a liquor produced in Chiapas. The locals love to stop for a cup of coffee at Cafeteria Impala so add that to your list.
The shopping on the avenue is excellent as well. There are a lot of neat souvenir shops and fashion shops along the way. Ceramics, home decor, and more.
Paseo Montejo is filled with buildings that mirror the architecture of New Orleans, Paris, and Cuba. The wealthy plantation owners selected this style in order to try and outdo each other.
