Cozumel Pearl Farm
COZUMEL, QUINTANA ROO, MEXICO
While cruising Cozumel in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico your stop would not be complete without visiting the Cozumel Pearl Farm, which is the only pearl farm in the world that cultivates pearls with their species of oyster (Pinctada Radiata and Atlantic Pearl) which is why their pearls are unique. The Pinctada Radiate and The Atlantic Pearl were almost extinct in the Caribbean so the Cozumel Pearl Farm has been slowing helping to change that. It takes years to cultivate pearls and perfect the technique. For that reason, the jewelry can only be purchased on their website, or by taking a tour at their farm directly. The jewelry is created by an independent Mexican artisan who has grown alongside them. |
This family owned and operated farm has been in business since 2001. The family of Don Francisco has worked tirelessly to get it off the ground and make it what it is today. As pearl farming goes, the business is actually quite young still. They are in the research phase and therefore production of the pearls is very limited.
The farm is located on the North side of Cozumel island in Quintana Roo and it is surrounded by beautiful turquoise water. Due to their location in the Caribbean Sea, hurricane season makes it a requirement to have the best anchoring systems possible to withstand the harsh conditions. Outside of that, and with so many wonderful reefs in Cozumel, it makes it an excellent place to grow and harvest the pearls. There is an enormous amount of work that goes into delivering the final product but for the Don Francisco family, it’s a dream that has been worth every second.
The farm offers six hour tours and even an overnight experience where you can sleep under a million stars with while becoming one with nature. The Cozumel Pearl Farm Project is a proud partner to the environment and works in unison to keep social and economic standards of sustainability high.
