The rooms in the museum start with the present day Mayan culture and return to explore the past of these ancient people. Exhibits feature from the pre-Hispanic era, there are stone sculptures, ceramic vessels, ornaments and luxury items made of shell, jade, and gold. They all come together to provide a framework of where the past meets the present. Included in that are the new technologies and digital systems that will give the visitor a sense of traveling back in time.

The goal of the Great Museum of the Mayan World of Merida is to promote the region and the country in collaboration with Mexico’s tourism, education, and cultural matters and projects. They hope to include their vision of identifying, dignifying, and promoting the Yucatan Mayan indigenous language. They are currently the first Mexican museum that to recognize this language as the country’s priority language.
