Quintana Roo is home to one of the Caribbean’s best kept secrets, Isla Contoy. This small island is just 5.3 miles long and has been a protected area by the Mexican government since 1961. Isla Contoy is the most important bird sanctuary in all of the Mexican Caribbean. The island is a safe haven for sea turtles and 152 different species of tropical birds. Some of the birds you will see on the island are the frigate, the brown pelican, and the double crested long eared cormorant. The logger head turtle, the green turtle, and the leatherback turtle are just a few of the species you will see.
This tiny island has so much to offer like a resting area with benches and barbecue grills, a watchtower, walking paths, a souvenir store, and the archeological underwater museum.
There are only a handful of tour companies that have been granted permission to escort guests to the island. There is a maximum number of 200 visitors per day allowed. If you plan to visit, the tours depart from Isla Mujeres or Cancun and will take about 1-2 hours.
