Underwater Museum of Art - MUSA
CANCUN, QUINTANA ROO, MEXICO
While cruising the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, the Underwater Art Museum (MUSA) is a fascinating undersea wonderland to discover if you are cruising Cancun, Quintana Roo. One of the hottest attractions in Cancun is scuba diving, and one of the best locations is actually a museum off the coast between Cancun and Isla Mujeres. Close to 750,000 tourists visit MUSA annually. |
The region is home to 170 different species of amphibians, and has the second largest reef, The Great Mayan Barrier Reef is second to Austrialia’s Great Barrier Reef.
The Cancun Underwater Art Museum (MUSA-Museo Subacuatico de Arte) is a big underwater art museum of contemporary exhibits that opened in 2009. Just a 10 minute boat ride from Cancun is where you will find the location about 10 meters below sea level. The artwork was created by several British and Mexican sculptors who placed close to 500 pieces on the west side of Quintana Roo National Park. It is considered the largest of its kind in the world.
Many of the items you will see have been constructed from pH neutral marine concrete that have been anchored into the ocean floor. It is made up of 3 galleries that showcase a variety of themes like the remains of ships, cars, statues, and more all covered with seaweed, coral and a variety of tropical fish. The blend of life-like exhibits are extremely interesting from figurines of people in a circle praying for hope, to a group of men with their heads buried in the sand. Time bombs, an actual beetle car will also having you scratching your head.
There are another 10 galleries with almost 1,200 statues that are projected to be added to the collection. No license or certification is required to scuba dive in Mexico, but it is highly recommended to have one or at least go with someone who is. However, if you are not a scuba diver, no worries as you can take a glass bottom boat tour or even take to the skies on a parasail and get a fabulous view of the museum.
